What are Terpenes and what do they mean to me?

For some growers Terpenes is a new term that's being thrown around in the industry quite frequently these days. Terpenes are a diverse class of organic compounds produced by a variety of plants, and some insects. Many terpenes are aromatic and may create a form of protection for the plant and are the major building blocks of Resin.

Terpenes and "terpenoids" are the primary components of the essential oils of many types of plants and flowers. Did you know plants use terpenes for everything from temperature regulation to pest control? A range of terpenes have even been identified as high-value chemicals in food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, the only issue is that plants produce such a small percentage of terpenes, making it difficult, time consuming, and expensive to extract them.

The average high terpene levels run at about 2%. Most recently though, there have been many studies done around Terpenes and a particular company using Kind LED's XL1000 achieved a terpene level of 3.78! That is Pretty amazing stuff! Not only do terpenes control smell, and flavor to some extent, but they also can be used for everything from a natural pesticide, to a treatment for bronchitis. Hopefully you enjoyed this weeks information, Thanks and happy growing!
